Beyond Picky Eating

How to Move Children Naturally Beyond Picky Eating:

I’ve personally been obsessed with this question for years, for two main reasons:

  1. Make my job less complicated and be able to cook what I love while also having my kids enjoy it.

  1. Help the families I work with avoid having to request separate meals for each family member; which saves money, prevents dinner-time tension, and honestly saves everyone time and energy.

So here’s what I’ve learned:

When children feel safe, curious, and included around food, resistance often drops down on its own.

But there are several elements that tend to support this shift.

Visual Appeal Matters More Than We Think

Children experience food first with their eyes.

Color, contrast, and presentation can spark curiosity before taste even enters the picture.

Most processed foods have been using this to their advantage (for far too long!, if you ask me)... bright colors, cartoon characters, fun packaging, catchy names… all designed to attract our kids' attention.

But here’s the beautiful part:

Nature already creates food to be naturally appealing.

When food feels inviting, exploration becomes much more likely.

Participation Builds Trust!

Kids who are involved in choosing ingredients, preparing meals, or simply observing the cooking process often develop a different relationship with food.

Ownership creates familiarity:

"Mom, Dad, Look what I made!"

Familiarity builds comfort:

"I know these ingredients so I want to eat them"

And comfort opens the door to trying new things:

"That looks like something I might like"

Gentle Education Works Better Than Pressure

A few years ago, I took a course on neuroscience focused on raising emotionally strong and resilient children.and I really love that they talked about how children are not able to absorb any information while having a melt down.

They advise to better share information through experience, storytelling, culture, and sensory

exploration with proven-evidence that it's more effective than through lectures or instructions.

But don't get me wrong. I don't always win these battles but where I've had consistent success in is in using this technique with foods and to even get the pickiest eaters of them all, to try and eat new things!

Understanding where food comes from, and what it does in the body, often nurtures intrinsic motivation rather than resistance.

Emotional Associations Shape Eating Habits

eating fruit, watermelon, summer produce, seasonal eating, food association

Food memories are more powerful that we think of them, on a daily basis. ("What sounds good to eat today?).

When meals are tied to stress, urgency, or pressure, children may internalize hesitation.

When meals are connected to joy, creativity, and connection, openness often follows.

And this is true for us adults as well. This is actually the first piece we start with in the Nourish to Flourish coaching course for parents and wellness seekers, and trust me, we all have a specific association with food that shapes our relationship with food and dictates when and what we eat.

Positive experiences tend to outlast instructions. Just like a fresh delicious watermelon in summer!.
